This the seventh ship to carry the name HMS Galatea was a
Light Cruiser. Built by Scotts of Greenock, laid down 02-Jun-1933, launched 09-Aug-1934, and commissioned 14-Aug-1935. On commissioning went to the Mediterranean as Flagship, Rear Admiral (D). At the start of WW2 was ordered back to home waters. Feb/Mar-1940 took part in operations to intercept Axis merchantmen trying to break out of Vigo. Apr-1940 took part in the Norwegian campaign, then May-1940 went to the Nore as Flagship 2nd Cruiser Squadron. Underwent refit Oct-1940 to Jan-1941 then went back to the Home Fleet. Took part in Bismarck operations May-1941. Then Jul-1941 joined the Mediterranean Fleet via the Red Sea. In Nov 1941 was base at Malta with Force K operating against axis supply convoys to North Africa.. Torpedoed and sunk by U-557 off Alexandria, 14-Dec-1941 with the loss of 470. Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940, 'Bismarck' 1941 and Mediterranean 1941.
